Week 2

Part 1: Review and Reflect Learning Strategy:

Strengths -

Where to study. I am very good about limiting distractions while I study. I pick out a quiet spot when I can be reasonably sure I will be able to focus.

Thinking Skills. My job involves a lot of troubleshooting and given me quite a bit of practice with it. I am generally pretty good about stepping back and thinking through things step-by-step and from outside the box.

Keeping Notes. I like making my notes organized and easy to follow. I got in the habit in previous math and science classes that allowed a page of notes during exams. I found that I didn't have time trying to figure where on the page was the information I needed and that keeping it organized from the start saved a lot of valuable time later.

Weaknesses -

Studying when rested. While I do try to my studying on my days off, I often need to spend time during my workweek to study and the only time I have available for that is often after work late in the evening.

Reading. While reading is actually a hobby of mine, I've found that when I need to read when I'm tired or in a hurry I can read a page or two and then realize I have no idea what I just read. This results in me often having to go back and read the same piece multiple times before I can tune back in.

Answering Easy Questions First. My biggest weakness here is that once I decide to move on to a problem and come back to it, it is stuck in the back of my mind. I'm stuck worrying about if I will have time to go back to it? How many point will I miss if I can't? Did I waste too much time on it already? I get stuck worrying so much that I don't devote the required attention to the problems in front of me.

Part 2: Preview Time Management Skills:

I like to maintain the same routine throughout the week. I feel this helps me build a habit of doing something. I don't have to worry about the when that way.

Part 3: Project Management Basics:

The first video went over the differences between projects and operations. It then covered the 5 phases of project management which is called the project life cycle. The video also covered why project management is important and how projects can fail. It mentioned poor time management, cost management failure, scope management problems, poor quality management. Project manager skills are covered, there are 6 of them. The second video covered work breakdown structure which is a break down of how work needs to be done in order for a team to complete project objectives and deliverables. It’s done to organize and define what a project entails and all the parts that will go into finishing it. The third video explains Gantt charts which are a type of bar chart that outlines the schedule for a project including the start, end and every step in between. Depending on the project some will outline predecessor tasks, which are tasks that need to be done before other steps can be started. There are 3 different completion times listed for each step starting from optimistic and moving toward pessimistic estimates.

Part 4: Check Out Previous Capstones:

Part 5: Summarize Your Week on Your Learning Journal:

This week a vast majority of my time was spent researching and writing my Industry analysis paper. Starting a paper is always difficult for me, but once I get going it is a lot easier for me to push through than to try to stop and restart another time.

  1. Hi Jess,

Your schedule looks very similar to mine in that it is filled with work and gym time and heavy with homework on the weekends. I'm not as strict with my schedule though. Sometime my gym time will be during lunch, or the morning instead of night. How's the schedule holding up for you so far? The same thing happens to me if I try to read while I'm too tired. At that point, I just end up taking a nap for a moment to refresh, otherwise I can't retain any information.

We are about half way through the class! Goodluck on your ethics paper and the latter half of class!

  2. Hello Jess,
Your schedule is very strict, whereas I tend to study throughout the week, but generally try and do most of the work over the weekend. However, I sometimes diverge depending on the assignments due for the week. My only suggestion might be to do homework before going to the gym, so you aren't tired and can focus better. I understand that's not always possible, so if your current schedule works for you, keep at it.

  3. Hi Jess, your schedule looks great! It is thought out with details like walking your dog and allotted time for meals and gym. It is great to see your schedule has break and unwind times. That is something I left out and need to make a priority as the burnout is coming in. Also the way you are utilizing your work hours during the week to get 3 days of consistent studying in is very efficient.
